{"id":80,"date":"2010-10-21T08:24:20","date_gmt":"2010-10-21T12:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pastorsblog.lakeviewhamilton.com\/?p=80"},"modified":"2010-10-21T08:40:47","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T12:40:47","slug":"putting-principles-into-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pastorsblog.lakeviewhamilton.com\/?p=80","title":{"rendered":"Putting Principles into Practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How big is our Christianity?<\/p>\n<p>As citizens of the United States, one of the greatest obligations we have is to vote.\u00a0 We get to participate in the process of government by choosing those who will make decisions for us for the next few years.\u00a0 Christians have even a higher obligation, not to government or to fellow citizens, but to God, to express in their vote the principles of Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>Recent published surveys have detailed an appalling lack of biblical knowledge among church attendees.\u00a0 Maybe we no longer know what principles we are to judge candidates by?\u00a0 Perhaps we can no longer form an opinion based on biblical truth about taxes, property, crime, and the role of government?\u00a0 The Founders feared such a time would come, so they encouraged Bible reading and lessons and involvement in church and religion.\u00a0 They knew that without a virtuous people there would be no virtuous leaders and without virtuous leaders the country they started would fail from within.<\/p>\n<p>As Christians we must be involved in the political process, and we must vote for those who will uphold and further biblical principles.\u00a0 Moses was told to select able men who feared God as rulers: <strong>Exodus 18:21 <\/strong>Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place <em>such<\/em> over them, <em>to be<\/em> rulers of thousands, <em>and<\/em> rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:\u00a0 This is wise counsel for us also and who can argue that it is not God\u2019s will.\u00a0 God has given us guidelines for whom to choose and how to judge who is best for any particular office.<\/p>\n<p>This poem from an earlier era has often been my prayer.<\/p>\n<address>GOD, give us men! A time like this demands<\/address>\n<address>Strong minds, great hearts, true faith and ready hands;<\/address>\n<address>Men whom the lust of office does not kill;<\/address>\n<address>Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy;<\/address>\n<address>Men who possess opinions and a will;<\/address>\n<address>Men who have honor; men who will not lie;<\/address>\n<address>Men who can stand before a demagogue<\/address>\n<address>And damn his treacherous flatteries without winking!<\/address>\n<address>Tall men, sun-crowned, who live above the fog<\/address>\n<address>In public duty, and in private thinking;<\/address>\n<address>For while the rabble, with their thumb-worn creeds,<\/address>\n<address>Their large professions and their little deeds,<\/address>\n<address>Mingle in selfish strife, lo!
